Creative Exercise for Travel Writers

  1. In magazines/newspapers pick four travel articles and identify what the focus of the article is? Is the article general information/description about a certain destination? Does the article focus on a particular aspect of a destination such as sightseeing, outdoor activities/adventures, dining, nightlife, accommodations, day trips, etc? Does the article have a special interest angle such as environment/ecotourism, spas, history, cuisine, etc. Is the article a service piece with advice/news about some aspect of the overall travel experience such as health, luggage, security, currency, governmental regulations, etc?
  2. Go through the same four articles, or four others, and jot down the specific aspects of a destination or a service-oriented story which are covered.
